Uber Launches Improvements To Boost Accessibility
Uber, a ride-sharing company, is adding features and training its drivers to support riders with disabilities.
People with disabilities, such as those who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind, or have low vision, will be able to identify themselves and select their communication preferences. They can choose to be reached by phone, chat, or both. This way, drivers are aware and prepared before the pickup, facilitating effective communication between riders and drivers from the start to the end of the ride.
Furthermore, Uber is collaborating with blind individuals, service animal advocacy, and training groups to develop an educational video. It plans to distribute this video to all drivers to highlight the importance of service animals and provide guidance on how to transport them. Additionally, the company is working on a pilot program that allows riders to inform drivers that they are accompanied by a service animal.
These steps should help Uber create an inclusive and accessible platform for people with disabilities to access rides.
