Nearly 99% Of Adults With Autism Have No Employment Services

Adults with autism are facing difficulties receiving support or any help to find and keep a job. Few individuals do have a job, but often times it is only short term.

According to a publication in the journal The Milbank Quarterly, around 1.98 million or 99% of working age individuals on the autism spectrum had no employment help either through Medicaid or vocational rehabilitation. This tells us that only a limited amount of individuals are getting services.

Vocational rehabilitation gave employment assistance almost eight times more to people with autism compared to Medicaid. However, these services are short term and people with autism do need long term and flexible support work. Having longer access to employment not only provides salary but also better health. Hence, better planning and funding of employment support is needed for current and future youth on the autism spectrum.
